Resurrecting some fun from the past.

I was doing some cleaning up on my computer and I came across a couple of old blog posts that I had written for another blog I had started years ago. I never really did much of anything with the old blog and I am in the process of deleting it, but for some reason I couldn't bring myself to delete these posts. I thought I would give them a home on this blog instead.

From "There goes our corn" - September 6, 2010

We had a surprise yesterday morning in the garden. After months of relatively trouble free gardening I was beginning to think that my concerns over animal intrusions into the garden were unwarranted. Unfortunately, however, our corn was destroyed by something. The following is what it looks like after a hungry bear discovers you have corn in your garden. Fortunately we didn't plant much corn in the first place since we were just experimenting.

It wasn't much but that centre row used to be occupied by four tall, proud cornstalks. Now there are only three flattened, gnawed on stalks...
We decided to do a little crime scene analysis and this is what we found:

Exhibit A: A leaf that could only have come from our cornstalks lying on the ground west of the garden.

Exhibit B: A small bear paw print in the gravel near exhibit A. Given the good definition in the print and that we had heavy rain just prior to the raiding of the corn, I think it is safe to say that this belongs to our perpetrator.

Exhibit C: Moving into the bush across from the gravel road, I found this chip bag all shredded and lying on the forest floor. This chip bag is supposed to be compostable so Jess and I had put it in our compost to see what would happen. Apparently we can now also add "raiding the compost bin" to the list of charges.

Exhibit D: The missing fourth cornstalk. We found this lying in the bush just a little further in from the chip bag. This was definitely the route of escape for our perp.
It looks like we won't be enjoying any corn from our garden this year. I've always known that corn is a bear magnet so I knew there was some risk in planting it. Given that corn is such a nutrient hog in the garden and that we have such an abundance of black bears, it makes me question the wisdom of growing it at all...

From "Busted!" - September 6, 2010

This just in! The perpetrator of the great corn caper was caught on film fleeing the scene of the crime after returning earlier this evening!

Here he is, his guilt causing him to run away in shame! Just a young pup. Hopefully he's learned the error of his ways.
